A free agent striker who recently trialled with Sheffield Wednesday has suggested there is little chance of the Owls making him an offer to sign for the club.

Lyle Taylor’s time at Middlewood Road ended at the turn of the month, with the 33-year-old having been brought in for a look as the Owls looked to strengthen their forward line. One place was left open in the club’s EFL registration list, with now departed manager Xisco having made clear he hoped to find a suitable addition - though it wouldn’t be easy.

It was confirmed that Taylor was no longer training with the Owls ahead of the Spaniard’s dismissal as Wednesday boss, though the door was not closed on a potential contract offer.

Speaking to BirminghamLive, the former AFC Wimbledon and Nottingham Forest forward has expressed his frustration at the current situation he finds himself in, suggesting there are no imminent talks of a return to football having last played a senior club game in May 2022.

He said: “Life is a little bit more difficult, with not having a club currently, but that’s the other side of the beast, which is what people don’t see. That is what it is.

“Football is an ever-changing world. If one opportunity isn’t taken at one point, one year ago, 15 months ago, if one opportunity isn’t taken it can have a knock-on effect whereby they don’t come your way. That’s pretty much where I am. I tried to make things work, with a year left on my contract after I’d been on loan at Blues and I find myself now where I am in the middle of October.

“I’ve been doing commentary and punditry for two years, but ultimately I’m 33, able bodied and I can still score goals. Nothing has changed for me in the last 15, 16 months since I left Blues. I can still score goals, as proven by the fact that the goal doesn’t move. I go away on international duty, I know people will say it’s not the same standard, but you still have to put the ball in the net.

“That’s all I can do - wait and hope something happens. Until something does happen, I’m kind of an unenviable position where I have to keep myself in a condition in the hope that somebody does come and bang on the door.”

Wednesday’s remaining registration place could well go to previously outcast winger Marvin Johnson, who played in the Owls under-21s’ clash at Coventry City on Tuesday afternoon. Midfield man Momo Diaby is making progress with his foot injury, though his return is not expected to be especially imminent.
